Aburi is a small town just north from Accra. It was originally built by the British during the 19th century. Aburi is situated on top of a one of the green hills in this area. The climate is much cooler then in the capital and the rest of the Ghanaian coast and there are no malaria mosquitos here, because the temperatures are too low. This is why the British chose this place to build a sanatorium and resthouse. Later, in 1890, they started with a large botanical garden around the sanatorium.
Today the Aburi Botanical Garden is the main attraction of the town, and the beautiful old sanatorium is still standing right in the middle of the park. But the town is also a perfect base for a visit to Ghana's oldest cocoa farm, and for an active tour on a mountainbike.

Just an update on the Olyander Hotel. I stayed there for a week recently with a group of sixth form students from the UK. The hotel is now much improved and under new management. It is now a very friendly, comfortable and welcoming hotel.
:) I like the look of Aburi. Would love to go mountainbiking through the Akwapim-hills and also see the botanical gardens. The strengling ficus looks awesome.
