Internacional Mochilero Guesthouse and other Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala Hotel/Accommodation Reviews

Mochilero Guesthouse is a nice and small guesthouse just a few hundred metres away from the city centre of Antigua. It is a pretty cheap place to stay and the price of $ 15,- for a double room is quite worth the money.

The guesthouse looks very nice inside. There is a small inner garden with beautiful plants and flowers and a very cosy area to sit. Around this garden you will find the rooms that are very basic. There is nothing more then two simple bed, a small wooden desk and a wooden chair. The bathrooms are shared. One bathroom in the front of the guesthouse still is pretty ok, another one is in the back, under a stairway and has the record of "the smallest bathroom ever". A toilet, a sink and a shower at a surface of 1,5 square metre.

Over all the guesthouse is very basic, but with a very nice atmosphere. The owner is a nice guy and very willing to help. Only other negative point are the men that hang around in the guesthouse all day long starting with a nice conversation with the guests, but ending with trying to sell their tours.

Directions: Coming from the Central Park, walk up to the Cathedral La Merced, and then go left. Follow this street for two blocks and the guesthouse is on your lefthand side.

This guesthouse was full when we came there to find a room, and I must say I'm happy about that. The location of the hostel is great, the prices are good and the inside looked nice. But... When we came in all we saw were "gringo's" hanging around in the lobby. Not that I have something against westerners, but when I'm in Central America I'd like to keep it to the local people as much as possible. Jungle Party definitely is not the place to be if you agree with me. Even the staff is American and when you enter the guesthouse all you will hear is a "Hello, good afternoon..." instead of the "Hola, buenas tardes..." that I'd like to hear.

Some of you will probably have no problem at all with the "problems" I just mentioned, but hopefully this will help those who'd like to stay between the local people as much as possible.
