  • Favorite Thing: If you want to have a little bit of structure in your visit of Paris, The Big Line of Paris is a wonderfuil guideline. When you look at a map of the city you see a straight line of several km´s going all the way from the Louvre up to La Défense. Metroline no. 1 follows this line for a long time. The line guides you from The Louvre, through the Gardens of Tuileries to the Place de la Concorde (where you have a mighty sight over the city). From there over the Champs Elysees to the Arc the Triomphe and then all the way to La Défense with his Grande Arche.

  • Favorite Thing: Did you know that there is not only one Arc the Triomphe in Paris. There are three. Beginning with the Arc du Carroussel in the gardens of the Louvre-museum. This is the smallest of all. The famous Arc de Triomphe on Place de l´Étoile fits exactly over the Arc du Carroussel. And the biggest Grande Arche, of La Défense fits perfectly over the Arc de Triomphe. Find out your self!

Arrondissements (sections of Paris): The Arrondissements

  • Favorite Thing: The city of Paris may look enormous and chaotic, but there really is a lot of structure to be found. The easiest way to find your position always is to look for the Eiffel Tower, but it can also be useful to pay attention to the so called “arrondissements”. These arrondissements (litterly: go-aroundings) have number from 1-20, that are visible on every nameplate of the streets in Paris.

The structure starts at the Louvre with the 1st arrondissement. From there the number go round and round like a snail, ending with the 20th arrondissement in the neighbourhood of Père Lachaise. The arrondissements only divide the area inside the major ringway around Paris, the Periferique. Every arrondissement also is divided in four quarters. So Paris has 80 quarters in total inside its Periferique.

    General Tips: Plane trees
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

  • Favorite Thing: The picture is not a close-up of an army-uniform, it is the bark of the Plane trees you see everywhere in France, and also in Paris. This Plane tree, or Platanus x acerifolia as its Latin name is, is a perfect tree for parks and along streets, because it is very strong and doesn't need much space for its roots.

In many places in Paris you see these trees: the Champs Elysées, Place des Vosges, Jardin des Plantes, even La Défense. Often their leaves pruned into perfect square or round shapes to create the most romantic places. The thing I like most about this tree though, is its bark. I call it the "jigsaw-puzzle-tree" because that is exactly what it looks like.

The plan of getting off at the next stop was what we used on our French exchange trip. Luckily we never used it!
