The city of Sandakan is Sabah's second largest city, situated at the state's eastcoast. It used to be the capital of the state in the time of British North Borneo. During the Second World War though it was heavily bombed in battles between the British and the Japanese, and after the war in 1945 there was hardly anything left of the city.
After the war the city was slowly rebuilt again and became one of the worlds leading places for timber export. Millions were made by selling Borneo's fantastic wood, until the period in which the forest were protected to safe its natural value.
After that Sandakan became the centre of tourism that it is nowadays. It is the perfect place to start an active vacation in Sabah: close to the Turtle Islands, very close to Sepilok and a good starting point to see the Proboscis monkeys.
