Visiting Christchurch and not having a quiet stroll at the Botanic Gardens .. then I would say that your trip is less than fufilled. Its simply amazing how much time and effort have been put in by the gardeners and landscapers to make it what it is .. but the results are simply breathtaking.

Like most Commonwealth countries, NZ have a lot of war inspired monuments to honor the war heroes of days past. With inscriptions such as Galipoli, WW1, WW2 and such its a continued dedication to the memory of all soldiers who have served and continue to serve in the World Wars and conflicts.

The Chalice was created to celebrate the new millennium and the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Christchurch and Canterbury by the Canterbury Association. The 42 leaf patterns – complex constructions made up of computer routed shapes – are also intended to reflect the geometric features of the Cathedral, architecture, windows and tiles. As the leaves become larger, higher up the sculpture, they also become more detailed and less dense. The open texture of the artwork allows views into and through it."

New Zealand women achieved a first in the world when they won the right to vote. The Kate Sheppard memorial, a commemoration to Women's Suffrage was unveiled on 19th September 1993 and sits beside the River Avon for all to see. The story is when Kate Sheppard went to Parliment and requested for the right to vote, she was asked to produce 4 pages of signatures .. instead, she produced a barrel full of signatures and thus history is born.

Put up by his wife, the marble statue of Robert Falcon Scott commemorates the death of Sir Scott and his party returning from the South Pole in 1912. The inscription to the memorial reads: "I do not regret this journey which shows that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another and meet death with as great fortitude as ever in the past."
