When I first arrived in this quiet city in the greater Berlin metro area in August 2003, it couldn't have been a more normal city. But embedded within the tranquil streets and neighborhoods of Oranienburg are the remnants of one of the darkest periods in modern human history.
The city is home to Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp built in 1936 and used as a prototype for larger, more notorious camps. It was then used in postwar years as an East German prison camp.
All in all, my journey to Oranienburg was a mind-opening experience, and one I will never forget. |
