|  | When I went to Beirut, it was illegal for Americans to go there. (This changed in 1997, when the law was amended.) Nevertheless, I was determined to see my best friend Peter who was working as a journalist there.
It was an incredible trip. I went to the war-torn border between Lebanon and Israel, saw the largest Roman temple ever constructed (at Baalbeck), learned how to smoke from a water pipe and ate some of the tastiest food in the world.
