Things To Do: Seaspray Day Sailing Adventure
  • Tip Rating:
  • For those of you who are staying on the mainland, but want to see a bit of the islands this is the perfect way to go. The trip leaves the Denarau Marina, initially on the motorised catamaran Tiger IV which drops passengers off at Treasure and Beachcomber Islands. You disembark at Mana Island and transfer to an old sailing ship the "Sea Spray" which is 83 feet long. From here you travel out to Modriki (where the Tom Hanks movie "Castaway" was filmed) as well as Monu and Yanuya, going ashore to visit a traditional village as well as snorkelling

  • If you are wanting a trip out to one of the larger islands and are also particularly interested in sailing, Musket Cove is the place to go. You can get there either by regular ferry transport, or do what we did and go there as part of a day sailing trip on the catamaran "Wanaka". There are two resorts on the island - Musket Cove and Plantatian Island as well as some timeshare accommodation. There is a great marina facility there for those who want a save harbour or a base from which to cruise the islands.

  • If you are looking for something restful, peaceful and beautiful, you can't go past the Garden of the Sleeping Giant which is on the road between Nadi and Lautoka. It used to be the private orchid garden of Raymond Burr but is now open to the public. We went in September and there were lots of beautiful orchids on display. You are left to freely walk around the gardens and when we were there we were the only ones. Really makes you feel like its your own.

Things To Do: Catamaran sailing on "Wanaka"
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are into sailing (as we are) but haven't been able to sail up to Fiji, this is your opportunity for a "real"sailing experience. The sailing catamaran "Wanaka" departs from Denarau Marina, takes you out to the outer reef break where you hopefully see the spinner dolphin. Then it's on to the sandbar for some snorkelling which was amazing. Very shallow water but with awesome visibility, coral and fish galore. Then they take you into Musket Cove for lunch - we recommend the fish but there is a meat option and then (wind permitting) a fast sail home.

    Things To Do: Snorkelling
  • Tip Rating:
  • I know every one recommends it, and I have to agree. I am a diver of old and was a little sceptical of what I would see "Just snorkelling". Suffice to say I am a convert. We were able to go snorkelling several times during our trip, both around Malololailai and Modriki Islands. This photo was taken from the catamaran "Wanaka" on the sand bar close to Malolokailai

The orchids are beautiful aren't they? I went there 13 years ago. My youngest daughter managed to lock herself in the toilets, bit of a drama!!
