Waiheke Island Travel Guide: 61 reviews and 150 photos

Waiheke Island is only 35 mins from downtown Auckland by ferry and is a must see place if you have some time to spend in Auckland and surrounds.

In the past it was a very rural and some considered, alternative, place, but whilst the arts and craft continue to survive, it has also become home to a variety of vineyards, multimillion dollar homes (some of which can only be seen from the water) and a mixture of lovely beaches, historical sites and great restaurants and cafes.

You can either take the foot ferry from Downtown Auckland which deposits you in Matiatia Bay or drive to Bucklands Beach and take the car ferry. A car is a must if you want to explore the island - but if you don't want to take your own car there are both rental car and bike options on the island.

Visit the Vineyards

Waiheke is home to a number of well known and less well known vineyards and the eastern part of the island is being planted in even more new vines as you view this page.

One of the most well known and I believe most visited wineries is The Mudbrick which was established back in 1992.

They have a fine tasting room, great restaurant and beautiful surroundings. What better place for a weekend lunch or dinner, conference or even a wedding.

Also a must visit place is Te Whau. Although not as well developed as The Mudbrick, the restaurant is considered by those in the know to be the best on the island. Certainly when we visited it was superb - you have to try the Seafood Platter - the best I have ever tasted and the restaurant has a view to die for.

Waiheke Island looks like a natural paradise. I wish I was so lucky as to have to attend a conference being held there!!

Great tips, Deidre! :-) I spent today on Waiheke Island. Unfortunately, I didn't get as far east as Stony Batter and the vineyards and restaurants were a bit over my budget (so it was a toasted sandwich at Surfdale for me!).
