For most people, Taj Mahal in Agra symbolizes India. I believe, mistakenly so. Although, a masterpiece of human craftmanship, it doesn't really reflect the Indian culture as I have felt it. Most of the "sights" one sees around Delhi and Agra were built from the Mughals, a muslim dynasty. If I am correct, their achievements were created in a span of less than 2-3 generations.
Most people consider this majestic building a hymn to love, it could also be a hymn to vanity. But then again, which of the great ancient monuments isn't?
My suggestion is to avoid the tourist guides and stay out of the flock. Do your homework beforehand. Everything that is targeted to tourists is so distracting that you are in serious danger of leaving this place with the feeling that you have missed it!
Nevertheless, Agra is also famous for other great monuments and sights which I, unfortunately, missed this time... |
