Ice Cold in Alex

The Corniche, Alexandria
We took a day trip to Alexandria from Cairo and although a day is nowhere near enough time to appreciate the city we were able to see quite a few sites, walk through the streets and enjoy a cold stella lager at the Cecil Hotel!
Walking along the Cornice with the sun glinting off the sea, watching the boats in the harbour and people sitting on the beach and swimming in the sea was a lovely experience. A real holiday atmosphere.
At the Roman Amphitheatre it was easy, sitting on the marble seats, to imagine taking part in a debate or watching a play. The Graeco-Roman Museum has some wonderful statues and an amazing mummified crocodile. The catacombs of Kom el Shogafa were quite eerie but fascinating and Pompey's Pillar very impressive.
Steve at the train station in Alex
We took the train from Cairo to Alexandria. The journey time took 2 and a half hours on the fast Turbini train. The cost of a return ticket, travelling 1st class, was 68 Egyptian pounds each. The journey was great, very relaxing, and it was really nice to watch the Egyptian countryside, the farmland and the small villages and towns go past.
Many of the buildings appeared to be being built in stages, the upper parts half-finished waiting for the next storey to be added. An un-finished staircase sticking out of the top of a building was quite a surreal sight.
