A little bit of history

Old postcard of Sremski Karlovci
The picturesque town of Sremski Karlovci is situated on the slopes Fruska Gora, on the banks of the large European river, the Danube, on the transit road between Belgrade and Novi sad which links the East and West. The townis easily reached by railway, waterway or highway, and the visit to this town will always remain in a pleasant memory.
The traces of human life in this area go back as far as the early Stone Age. During the Romans, the town had its fortification on Limes and in the oldest written document from 1308 the town of Sremski Karlovci was mentioned as a fortress under the name Karom or Karon.
In a written document from the Turkish rule, or more precisely from 1553 the town was mentioned for the first time its present name - Karlovci.
In the 18th and 19th century Sremski Karlovci had reached its cultural ans spiritual peak. Already in 1713 it had become the Serbian Orthodox diocese of a metropolitan, and before that it had been moved from Pec to the monastery Krusedol. Soon, in 1726 the first high school, grammar school of theology was founded in this town. In this period the copper printing house of Zaharije Orfelin had started its work. In 1734, the first modern theater performance was shown in Sremski Karlovci. Thanks to the efforts of the Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirovic, the First Serbian High School was founded in 1791, and later on in 1794 the Seminary. Stratimirovic is also responsible for the metropolitan-patriarch library, the First Serbian Drawing School and the first Serbian scientific society Karlovacki krug (The Karlovac Circle). The present high school building was built by priest Stefan Andjelic.
The Orthodox Catedral St. Nikola was built in 1762 and Patriarch Court in 1894. In the first half of the 18th century the Upper and Lower Churvhes werw built, and baron Rajacic's Palace "Ilion" was built in the second half of the 19th century. Somewhat far away from the centre of the town there is Mother of Mira Chapel, which was built by Catholics of Karlovac in 1817, on the very place where in 1699 the Peace of Karlovac was signed.

Branko Radicevic

Branko Radicevic - famous Serbian poet

One of the most famous inhabitants of this town was Serbian romantic poet Brank Radicevic. He came to Karlovci on October 7, 1835 and finished 6 grades of secondary grammar school. He was one of the most outstanding student of this school. The maturity exam he had passed in Temishvar from where he went to Vienna to study there. Unfortunantly, he got ill with tuberculosis there and died at the age of 30, in 1853.
His main importance is that he was one of the first poets who wrote in his native tongue. He contributed enormously to the interduction of the national language into our literature. There are no pupils in our country who doesn't know the lines from his famous poet "Djacki Rastanak".

During the winter...

Durin the winter, when it snows, the town looks very beautiful as you can see in this pic!
