Bondi Beach is quite famous with Australians and visitors alike. I love the atmosphere at Bondi. You have a great, clean beach nestled between two cliffs full of townhouses. Along the foreshore are a myriad of retaurants. It is the place to be if you are young and beautiful. I went anyway :o). There are a number of walks that you can take around Bondi, or you can sit on the beach and relax. There are activities all year round, many of them are centered around the Pavilion. From kite flying and surfing competitions, to festivals, markets and galleries.

The Sydney Opera House is considered by many to be one of the wonders of the modern world. It is one of Australia's most popular and recognisable icons and is worth visiting just to get a photo in front of this great structure. The Opera House is the home of the The Australian Ballet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, The Bell Shakespeare Company among others. Even if you don't go to a production, there are plenty of other things to see around the Opera House, including the Botanical Gardens and Circular Quay.

The AMP Centrepoint Tower is a telecommunications mast with an observation deck at the 305 metre point. In 2000 there were three large artistic, athletic structures celebrating Sydney Olympics. The 305 metres high Observation Deck is the highest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Blue Mountains. An adult ticket to the observation deck will cost you $10.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is another famous landmarks. It was completed in 1932 and prior to the bridge being built, the only links were by ferry or by a 20 kilometre road route that involved five bridge crossings. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is known as the "Coat Hanger". A great idea is to visit the Pylon Lookout. The lookout has a great display on how the bridge was built.

Darling Harbour is one of those places that you tend to find tourists in flocks. For this reason I tend to stay away from this area when I travel to Sydney. It is a former dockside area that has been transformed into a major tourist site and leading convention and exhibition centre. A monorail service runs from the Central Business District to Darling Harbour. There are plenty of tourist attractions, such as: The Chinese Garden of Friendship Cockle Bay Wharf IMAX Theatre Sydney Aquarium National Maritime Museum Harbourside Shopping Centre Plenty of restaurants .

The Royal Botanic Gardens are a short walk around the water's edge from the Sydney Opera House. The gradens are located between the harbour and the CBD. There are great harbour views from up on the hill . There are large beautiful trees amongst the lush grass and it's a great place to grab a book and enjoy a sunny day. They open daily at 6.30am and close at sunset. Entry to the gardens is free.

Taronga Park Zoo is one of Australia's best Zoos. It has a large collection or native animals so if you keen to see a kangaroo or koala and haven't managed to see one in the wild, this is the place to visit. I love Mossman which is were the Zoo is located. It is located on elevated land along the water and has great views of the city.

King's Cross is a red light district and has all the well known sites that you find in these types of areas. Because of the tourism industry however it has started attracting a different crowd and now has some trendy cafes. The Cross is most sleazy at night, when the bright lights come on and the action hots up. During the day it can look a lot less threatening. Visitors to the area should be careful, especially at night, as people do get mugged here. Don't stare, no matter how strange the sight, as it might get you into trouble. Also, be careful whilst taking photos, you should ask first.

Newcastle is a 1 1/2 hour drive north of Sydney. It is worth a visit for the beautiful beaches, lovely heritage areas and more layed back atmosphere than Sydney. There are plenty of great walks including the Bathers Way walk and Newcastle East Heritage walk. If you are a keen hiker you might even like to tackle the Great North Walk which stretches between Sydney and Newcastle. For more information check out my Newcastle pages.
