Smart and stylish 4-star business hotel in a relatively quiet area just north of the city centre. The hotel is on the north side of the attractive Humlegarden park, which backs onto the Royal Library, and is only a 5 minute walk from Stureplan. Our standard double room was a good size by Scandinavian standards, and the bathroom was quite large, with a bathtub. Friendly and efficient service, and the usual good quality/good selection Scandic breakfast buffet. It is small enough to have more of a boutique hotel feel than some of the larger Scandics. Its slightly out-of-centre location means that it is probably not the Scandic of choice in Stockholm, but if you can get a cheap rate it is certainly worth it for the larger rooms and more exclusive feel.
Unique Qualities: Pleasant location on the edge of a park, but within easy reach of the city centre - especially the trendy Stureplan and Ostermalmstorg.

Scandic Sergel Plaza: Scandic Sergel Plaza - Good Quality/Good location

The Scandic Sergel Plaza is a modern chain hotel right in the commercial centre of Stockholm. This hotel is great if you want easy access to the mains shops and department stores and the transport network, but are still only a short (5 minute) walk from the old town (Gamla Stan). It is a fairly large, business/conference hotel, and looks pretty ordinary, but the rooms are a reasonable size, very comfortable, and nicely furnished & appointed (I think most have a bath) - good 4-star standard. There is not much atmosphere here, as they are really geared to handling conferences and tour groups, which they do very efficiently and in a way which avoids impacting too much on the individual guest. However, the location is really good. Just off Sergels Torg and the main shopping street. The metro (T-bana) is just around the corner, The central station is 5 minutes walk away (10 minutes for the airport express trains), and most of the main bus routes pass close by. The other big plus point for this hotel is the price. Because it is a Scandic, you can often get really good deals, especially if you pay in advance. Our double room cost just SEK 1,008 a night, including breakfast. Which was actually quite a bit cheaper than most of the 3-star hotels we looked at for that weekend. Recommended if you want comfort and a good central location at an affordable price. Not recommended if you want a "romantic" stay with personal service.
Unique Qualities: Good quality city centre hotel with an excellent location. Good deals available at weekends and during the summer.

We had always wanted to stay at this hotel because of its excellent location looking over the lake towards Stockholm's old town (Gamla stan). We finally got the opportunity during New Year 2006, when a special deal meant that we could stay in one of the best rooms in the hotel without breaking the bank. We got a king double "executive" room for SEK 1,395 per night (that is about GBP 105, or EUR 150). More than we would normally spend, but it was well worth it. Our room was on the top floor, and we had fantastic views over the lake and Gamla stan (see pics). What is more, we had access to the exclusive club lounge on the same floor. This was a bit like an airport club lounge, but with better views. Very stylishly furnished with comfy chairs and an open fire. Coffee, tea, soft drinks, and light snacks were available all day, and in the afternoon/evening there was beer, wine and spirits too. And snacks here does not mean just a bowl of peanuts! This was caviar and smoked salmon canapes, fresh bread, cheese and cold meats, as well as excellent sweets and pastries. And all included in the price. It was really nice to be able to come back in out of the cold (it was minus 8 degrees C) at the end of the day and relax in the warm with a coffee, cake and scotch, and not have to worry about Swedish prices. This is modern and stylish hotel, with efficient service. The room was very comfortable, although maybe a little small by international standards. Breakfast was very good, although quite busy. If you are in an executive room, you can have breakfast in the club lounge, which is much more relaxed. The hotel is very well located, close to the Slussen bus and metro interchange, which makes it very convenient for getting almost anywhere in Stockholm. It is walking distance to Gamla stan, and close to the excellent bars and restaurants on Södermalm. We had a great time here, and although it cost a bit extra, we felt that we got good value for money. It was very nice to start the new year with a bit of affordable luxury.
Unique Qualities: Fantastic location with views over the lake and the old town. Spoil yourself rotten if you can get a good deal on an executive room. Good transport connections.

The hotel is excellently located on the north side of Södermalm, just a couple of minutes walk from Slussen T-bane and bus stations, and a short walk to the old town (Gamla stan). When we stayed in July 2005, Scandic were offering cheap pre-paid rates for the summer. When we say cheap, we mean insanely cheap:- SEK450 per double room including breakfast. That is about GBP17 or EUR25 per person! Staff at the hotel are really friendly, and did their best even though Scandic's reservation system had done strange things with our booking. We had booked a large family room, but the computer system didn't like that so it had moved us to a different room, despite giving us a confirmation. The room we did get was acceptable, but quite small. However, as the rate was so cheap we weren't going to make a big issue at the time and spoil the end of the holiday. As already mentioned, the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Unique Qualities: Roof top terrace bar (7th floor) with great views over Stockholm.

A bit out-of-the-way, by Stockholm's Värtan ferry terminal (Silja Line). The only real reason to stay here is if you are getting the morning ferry. It was also attractive to us because they were doing a ridiculously cheap summer offer (just SEK450 per night for a double room inc. breakfast). Rooms are a bit shoe-box like, but nice enough, and have a great view over the harbour. If you are getting the 8am ferry, the breakfast room opens early enough for you to have some breakfast before checking-out and making you way to the ferry check-in.
Unique Qualities: Right next to the Silja Line terminal.

Classic Stockholm Södermalm hotel totally refurbished and re-opened as a boutique hotel in September 2003. All the rooms are individually designed and decorated, with a movies theme. All rooms have plasma screens and DVD players. The bathrooms feature an unusual internal window & blind arrangement which means you can let in natural light and/or watch the plasma screen. The first floor bar/restaurant/breakfast room has very nice balcony seating overlooking the tree-lined square. Normally very expensive, but their summer rates make them very competetive ("standard" rooms are SEK 995 for a double, "superior" rooms SEK 1,195).
Unique Qualities: Has a cinema!

Very stylish large modern independent 4-star hotel, next to the main station. The building is actually a former police station, although you wouldn't know it given the way it has been converted. The large lobby has a good sized bar, a huge aquarium, and the world's only year-round ice bar (very cool!). The standard rooms are smallish ("compact"), but very comfortable and nicely furnished. Good quality breakfast, and friendly staff. Also, it is right by the entrance to Stockholm Central Station and the Arlanda Express platforms, so is very handy if you are travelling by train or going to/from the airport. Rack rates here are expensive, but they often have special offers (eg at weekends) which can make it a much more affordable option. Most recently in December 2004 we paid SEK 1,190/night for a superior double room, inc breakfast. NB: The "cheapest" small rooms at this hotel are very small and have no windows.
Unique Qualities: Huge aquarium in the Lobby. The world's only year-round Ice Bar.

Pleasant modern 4-star hotel in a quiet side street in the north part of the city centre. One of the "Hip Hotels", it has rooms individually designed by different Swedish and international designers (although the standard rooms that we have stayed in are rather more straightforwardly designed and furnished). Easy walking distance to the main shopping area, (nearest T-bana station R?dmansgatan). The hotel is very nicely designed, and the rooms are comfortable and well laid-out. There is a restaurant and a small lobby bar. Good quality breakfast (including a waffle maker). We have stayed here three times now. The last time in March 2006 we got three nights for the price of two courtesy of Expedia.

This 3/4-star hotel is on the top 5 floors of the P.U.B. department store right in the centre of Stockholm's main shopping area. It is situated between Drottninggatan (the main pedestrian shopping street) and Hýtorget (the main market square) opposite the Concert Hall. The nearest T-bana (Hýtorget) is just across the square. We had a large triple room (large double bed and roll-out bed) as there were three of us. It was a slightly awkwardly arranged corner room with windows overlooking Hýtorget and a side street. The rooms were smart and clean, and the staff were friendly. The breakfast was excellent - particularly the rum cake and spiced biscuits (it was Christmas!). The hotel bar and lobby area were also very pleasant and relaxed (unlike most). We staryed for 6 nights over Christmas 2000 for SEK 1,375/night for three, including breakfast. Note that some of the smaller (cheaper?) rooms at this hotel have only small windows onto the atrium overlooking the department store below.
Unique Qualities: Excellent location.

This is a modern (1980s?), medium-sized (103 room) 3-star hotel on a quiet sqaure just north of the main shopping street. The rooms are comfortable and average size, and have large openable windows. There is a nice view over the rooftops from the 6th floor breakfast room. Short walk to the T-bana (Rådmansgatan). We stayed here in August 1999, and paid SEK 800/night for a double (inc. breakfast). Now operates under the Ramada banner.
