Our first visit to Stockholm was in July/August 1998. We had been so impressed by our first experience of Scandanavia (Copenhagen in particular) on our "Grand Tour" in 1997 that we decided to give Stockholm a try for a few days. We've been back numerous times since then - at least once a year, and four times in 2006. Stockholm is a great place for a weekend or short break. Getting there is not expensive, with fares from London to Arlanda airport on regular scheduled flights as low as around £100 return. Hotels however are a little pricey, but if you shop around you can get some good deals, especially during the Summer and at weekends. As with most European cities, eating well is usually a lot cheaper than in the UK, although wine and beer is generally more expensive. See the travelogue page listed below for more info on visiting Stockholm, details of our latest trips, and links to pictures, maps, blogs etc. |

Transport Because Stockholm is situated on a collection of islands, it is a bit more spread out than other cities of a similar size, and you really do need to use the public transport system. The three-day SL cards are the best value (SEK200 - about £16), since as well as all buses and the T-bana in the city, they also allow you to travel as far as you like on the commuter rail network - to the picturesque archipelago port of Nynashamn for example (55km south of Stockholm), or to the ancient lakeside town of Sigtuna to the north. You can also use them to get to and from Arlanda Airport by standard public transport (but not on the Arlanda Express or Flygbussarna) See the transportation tips below for more details. |
One thing you MUST do in Stockholm If you are only in Stockholm for a few hours, there is one thing that you must do:- the 17th century warship Vasa has been preserved in a truly excellent museum on Djurgarden. It is amazing - there is nothing like this anywhere else in the world. To get there take the tram, or bus 44 or 47, to Djurgarden and get off at the stop just over the bridge. We guarantee that you will not be disappointed! |
