Lindholm Høje is a suburb of the city of Aalborg, on the north side of the Limfjord in northen Jutland. And here you will find one of Denmarks best kept archaeological secrets.
On this small hillside overlooking the city there are over 700 burial and cremation sites dating from 400 - 1000 AD. The sites are marked by stone settings in a variety of forms: circular, oval, ship-shaped, and triangular.
The whole site was covered by 4m of sand for a thousand years, from shortly before 1000 AD untill the site was excavated in the 1950s.
What we have now is a uniquely preserved late iron age and viking age burial ground where you can wander around the thousands of stone markers, mounds and other archaeological remains.
This is a truly stunning site, and not to be missed if you are in the least bit interested in archaeology or the Vikings in particular. | | | View over the burial ground |
