"Dave and Andrew (The Deptford Lads)" deptlads's Profile
Dave and Andrew (The Deptford Lads) live in Deptford, London, close to the Thames about midway between Tower Bridge and Greenwich.
We like going on holiday. We first travelled together in the summer of 1997 on what Dave still calls "The Grand Tour", when we when we took a rail tour around northern Europe (Hamburg - Aarhus - Copenhgen - Malmo - Berlin - Prague - Munich - Cologne - Amsterdam).
We've done a lot of travelling in Northern Europe, and prefer to travel by train and boat from place to place on a meaningful itinerary (such as the Baltic Odyssey for example), although we also do city breaks (eg Brussels, Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm etc.)
We have our own website (www.highrise.dircon.co.uk/deptlads/ - or see link above) with details of all the places we've been, incuding restaurant and hotel reviews etc, so we don't want to repeat much of that here on VT. But we will try and provide some comment and critical links which might help fellow travellers.
We'll keep these pages to some of the smaller places we've been. There's more than enough on the www about popular stuff!
Since the "Grand Tour" we've travelled extensively in the Nordic Countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Faroe Islands), and been to Brussels (many times), Paris, Nice, North Yorkshire, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, Orkney, Shetland, the Lake District, Amsterdam, St Petersburg, Tallinn, Budapest, Lille, Frankfurt, Cologne, Luxembourg, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Zagreb, The Hague, Birmingham, Manchester, St Ives, Swanage, the Heart of England, Canada (coast-to-coast).
This map will give you some idea of where we have been. You can also see the Travelogue pages on our own website for more information.
As last year, we saw-in the new year on a ferry in the middle of the Baltic Sea. This time going from Stockholm to Tallinn. Unfortunately, the rather dreary rainy weather in Tallinn made for a damp start to the year.
One of Dave´s birthday presents in Nov 2006 was some vouchers for the Eurostar. Six of us ended up in Brussels for a weekend in February, and a good time was has by all.
Dave buggered off to KBH in March for a couple of weeks with a weekend in Hamburg as well, just before Andrew´s birthday in March. This was to be a trip to Gøteborg, but there was a big travel conference there that weekend. 2nd thoughts were for Edinburgh and a luxury hotel. That worked fine!
In May we marked 10 years together - so we couldn´t do that without a trip somewhere. We settled on North Norway. Starting in Tromsø, we meandered down to Trondheim via the wonderful Lofoten islands. Best thing to do is see the pics by following the link at the top of this page.
June saw us in Stockholm for a long weekend, and then in August we spent six days on our friend's narrowboat travelling 100 miles across the Heart of England.
We pondered going to Zagreb to celebrate Dave´s birthday this year, but finances meant that we stayed in the UK and had a pleasant couple of days in St. Ives on the Cornish coast.
To round off the year we had a trip to Cologne and Brussels with friends to try out the new Eurostar route from St. Pancras. That didn't end up quite so well, as Andrew had a nasty trip and fall on a tram track. A late-night ambulance trip to a german hospital was something which definately didn't feature on the original itinerary.
Finally, we spent Christmas week with some of Andrew´s family in a rented flat in Swanage, Dorset. That helped restore some cheer.
Now it´s time to start planning 2008!

Our big trip in 2006 was to be New Zealand to mark David reaching the milestone of 40 years on the planet.
Well that was the idea, but then Dave decided instead that he´d had enough of working for a while and jacked his job in. So the money that we would have spent getting to NZ we used instead for another jaunt around Europe. Itinerary included a number of places we hadn´t been to before:
Den Haag, Nykøbing F., Bornholm and Ystad
In the end Dave was away for two months (Andrew had to go back to work!) so jaunt is poss not the right term.
We were reunited after 6 weeks apart (the longest time that we had been apart in our near decade together) in baggage reclaim at Helsinki airport. We decided that it was better to have a long weekend away together before Dave faced real life again.
Other than that then, we´ve had two weekends in Stockholm and celebrated Dave´s 40th with a group of friends in Copenhagen.
To finish off the year NYE on the Tallink ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn with a few days in both cities either side.
Our main holiday for 2005 was meant to be to the Faroe Islands from London via Scotland, Orkney, and Shetland all by surface transport (on the way out at least). Ferries in the North Atlantic we must have been mad. I started listening to the shipping forecast again!
After two really smooth crossings things went rather pear shaped in trying to leave Shetland. We ended up on an overnight ferry to Aberdeen to pick up a flight to Faroe. The cause was storm force winds that forced our ship to the Faroes to miss out the scheduled stop in Lerwick on the way from Bergen.
We still had a rough trip southbound but we finally got to the Faroes and they were well worth the effort.
For Dave's birthday in November back in Copenhagen - made up for him missing a danish class!
After Christmas we took off to Helsinki. We have different opinions about what to do on NYE, but agreed that the ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm could be fun. It was!
Our main holiday for 2004 (The "Habsburg Tour" see below) was put back to September/October, so we couldn't resist the temptation of a short summer-time trip to some of our favourite places in the mid Baltic.
Starting in Stockholm, we then took the ferry to Mariehamn in the Åland Islands for a couple of days, then by ferry again to Turku, and train on to Tampere for a few days there, before going on by train to Helsinki where we were joined by other some friends from the UK.
See our Nordic Summer pages for more details.
We then had a bank holiday short break in Oslo at the end of August.
For good measure we threw in a spur of the moment trip (book and leave same day) to Stockholm between Christmas and New Year. Well we had nothing to do in London and the food in the fridge was going to keep!
Easter 2005 was spent in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, due to Dave's work commitments we couldn't get out there for Andrew's birthday on the 24th (and boy did I get grief about that <grin>) so it cost me a bottle of champagne in the room! We'd managed to get a deal in the Admiral on the waterfront - a hotel we'd fancied trying for a while, but had always been full. It was well worth it. We'd seen some odd reviews, but it is a hotel full of character. Staff are very friendly and were happy to deal with Dave practising his Danish.
In July, we were part of a small group celebrating a friend's birthday - taking in Hamburg, Kiel, Oslo and Stockholm. Yep back in the Baltic again.
Our "main" holiday for 2004: a 3-week circular rail trip around the former Habsburg Empire - taking in Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb and Lubiljana (lots of dragons there!). We had been to Budapest before, but all the other cities were new to us.
More details on our Habsburg pages.
In Nov 2003 we travelled across Canada by rail - a 4,000 mile train journey. See our Canada pages for more details.
Earlier, in July/August, we spent a very pleasant week and a bit touring Jutland (Denmark), with plenty of viking heritage, good food, and lovely (if not dramatic) scenery.
