Drei Husaren: "Perfect" is the word

Restaurant Name: Drei Husaren
One of he most elegant restaurants in Vienna, where the food is at the same top level as the ambiance. The all-male staff, dressed in military style liveries (some even wear epaulettes) provide am impeccable service. The only flaw. too much starch in the napkins, mine was so stiff I had the impression of having a tray on my lap!
Favorite Dish: Lobster soup, followed by Tafelspitz, a classic of the Viennese tradition, the favourite dish of Kaiser Franz Joseph. Adding wine, the price of this menu is about 60 Dollars per person.

Restaurant Name: Stadtbeisl
I "discovered" this restaurant the first time I went to Vienna as a young student, and I went there again and again during my business or leisure trips in this city. I recommended it to many other people and all loved it. The restaurant has several rooms, furnished in various styles, also downstairs, in vaulted rooms that once were the cellar of a monastery. There is no air conditioning, so it is not suitable in hot summer, unless you are so lucky to find a place at one of the few tables outside.
Favorite Dish: If you go there on a cold night, nothing can be better than the Gulyassuppe (this is the spelling they prefer here for Gulash) served in very nice pots to keep it warm. However, this is just one of the many dishes of the Austro-Hungarian tradition you can get here.

Restaurant Name: Oswald & Kalb
This restaurant has a reputation as a meeting place for artists. It closes at 2 am, so it is the right place for a late meal after a show or a concert. It is not open at lunchtime.
Favorite Dish: I cannot remember what I had (I dined there only once) but I remember that we were a party of 8 and all were pleased with the food, the beer and the ambiance.

Augustiner Keller: A Stadtheuriger by the Opera

Restaurant Name: Augustiner Keller
An informal place in the heart of the city, with a long tradition. You can find here the typical atmosphere of a Heuriger, but the Opera is just across the street. The vaulted rooms are furnished with large tables, so be prepared to share one with other customers if your group is small.
Favorite Dish: You can have the buffet (which includes drinks) or choose a-la-carte. You will find in the menu several classics of the Austrian tradition.

Kaffeehaus: In 19th Century style

Restaurant Name: Cafe Schottenring
This cafe, founded in 1880, makes it possible to dine with style at an affordable price. The furniture, the decoration, the chandeliers and the grand piano all contribute to form a picture of Viennese turn-of-the-century style. If you go there for an afternoon tea you will find also piano music (after 3 pm).
Favorite Dish: Zwibelrostbraten, a traditional dish consisting of a beef cutlet topped with rings of fried onion (not battered). A glass of red wine costs from 1.90 to 2.70. As a dessert I recommend Apfelstrudel, but you can also select a cake from the ones you can see in the glass showcase.

Restaurant Name: Wienerwald
Wienerwald is a big chain with restaurants all over Austria and Germany. When traveling in these two countries I often relied on Wienerwald for good meals at a modest price. This restaurant in particular is the one I visited more often, because of its central location. It has also a large garden to eat outside.
Favorite Dish: Most (but not all) of the dishes consist of chicken, prepared in different ways. You can find the list and prices in the Wienerwald website (the prices do not include service).

Restaurant Name: Zum Schwarzen Adler
The Viennese who recommended to me this restaurant love it especially because of its wide choice of the best Austrian wines. The interior is nicely decorated but not formal, there is also a garden to eat outdoor.
Favorite Dish: The food is an interesting mix of Austrian tradition and international cuisine, so in the menu you will find the classic Tafelspitz but also wok foods.

Alte Backstube: Rustic and cozy

Restaurant Name: Alte Backstube
The place where this restaurant is located was for several centuries a bakery. It is still a small museum of the art of bread making, with an exhibition of tools. The restaurant is furnished in rustic style and offers a pleasant, cosy atmosphere. It is open everyday, but on Sundays it is not open at lunchtime.
Favorite Dish: The menu is rather rustic. My suggestion is the Backstubenteller.

Restaurant Name: Fuhrgassl-Huber
There are many Heurigen around Vienna, and most of them are really good. I am suggesting this one because the Viennese I know have a special liking for it. Tourists like the Heurigen in summer, because there is plenty of space to eat outdoor, but I have been at Fuhrgassl-Huber in November, and it was very pleasant and cosy to dine by a fire-place.
Favorite Dish: There is a wide choice of the classic Heurige meat dishes, and also a lots of vegetables.
