The home of a solitary king

by Manara - last update: Dec 22, 2003

I had read about Ludwig II, I had seen the movie by Luchino Visconti, but only when I visited Linderhof I understood how much that man longed for solitude.

If you wish to know more, please follow me in the tour of this castle and its beautiful gardens.
The location is very strange ideed for a royal castle. It is literally in the middle of nowhere: no town, not even a small village near it. It is in a green valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains, undisturbed.

The other revealing aspect is the size itself of this castle.

From the first time I saw pictures of it I was suprised by the discrepancy between the size of the building, as seen from outside, and the grand interiors.
Now I know the reason: the big difference between this castle and any other royal palace is that it has only rooms meant for the king's personal use, so it has no reception halls, ballrooms or banqueting halls, and no rooms for guests.
Most revealing of all: it does not have rooms for a royal family.

Thanks Anna Maria for bringing back memories of Linderhof especially its internal rooms. Yes, this palace and its garden shows how much Ludwig longed for solitude "in the middle of nowhere". I couldn't make photos inside it was forbidden then.
