misadventures...

The beach at Sopot
Well, most of my recent holidays seem to have been last-minute, Oh-my-God-everything-has-been-cancelled kinda affairs, and Gdansk was no different :p But all i can say is: thank heavens for spontaneous adventures!

Myself and Asia were supposed to be heading to the Mazury province (Polish lake districy) for new years... the day before we were supposed to leave, we got a call... "It's cancelled!" So, flat panic ensued, and after suggestions such as Prague, Italy, Stokholm and Berlin, we eventually decided to stay in the country, and head up North, to Gdansk... It proved to be a most excellent decision :)

Gdansk

We got to the city rather late in the evening, thanks to a broken-down train outside Warsaw, but after eventually finding our hostel (5 minutes from the station) we headed into the old town, and we fell in love. again. After spending the next day walking all over the old town (and some of the new) i realised that Gdansk has one of the most beautiful, and unspoiled, old towns in all of Poland. Add to the this the uniqueness created by the mix of German and Polish architecture, and it's a city that's worth visiting over-and-over again.

In the evening, we attended the New Years concert. held in the main square - it was brilliant. nuff sed.

Sopot

On the 1st January, we headed out to Sopot for the day. This is another beautiful destination, though slightly too touristy for my liking. even in the middle of the polish winter, there were thousands of tourists wandering the streets, and on the pier. That aside, there are some very interesting sights to be seen, from the "warped house" to the top of the lighthouse, and the very end of the pier... where you're likely to freeze to death before your photo can be taken...
