Zakopane & the Tatra Mountains

by Bushman23 - last update: Jan 7, 2006

A slice of Heaven

The Carpathian mountains
It's in the Tatra mountains that i really fell in Love with Poland. It is completely different to the rest of the country (which is pretty much flat...), and so incredibly beautiful! The air is clean and crisp, the mountains are never ending, even from the top of Swinica (2301m), the people are accommodating & friendly, and the hikes... well, they're torture!

The Mountains

We did 2 days worth of hiking in the Tatras, 9 hours on the Saturday, followed by 6 hours on the Sunday. Both hikes were quite strenuous, but at the end of the day it was worth every pulled muscle and twisted ankle sustained on the way!

Saturday - Hiked from Kuznice to the top of Kasprowy Wierch, then headed East to the summit of Swinica (What an Ascent!). After recovering slightly, we continued East towards Zawrat, heading South just before ascending the peak, downwards into the Valley of Five Lakes. Basically following the Lakes around the Valley, we hit a left just before the Shelter, following the Rostoka river back to the road & the car park, where we hitch-hiked back to town.

Sunday - Using the same starting point (Kuznice), we trekked right, heading to the peak of Giewont, one of the most recognisable peaks in the Tatras, because of the huge cross on top. After a long, tiring ascent, the descent was bliss, and we finished the hike at the Car Park on Krzeptowki Road, and then walked another hour into town.

Zakopane

Didn't see too much of Zakopane to be honest, just the main street, which is very touristy, even at the end of October, and Krzeptowki, a seemingly never ending road (especially after a long hike), which has some beautiful buildings and churches along it. Most notable of these is the Sanktarium Matki Boskiej Fatimskiej, Built in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving Pope John Paul II after he was shot.

A fantastic website about Zakopane can be found at Zakopane. Its worth Seeing before you go.
