Scotlands beautiful Capital

by Bushman23 - last update: Nov 4, 2009

My favourite city

Edinburgh city from the castle hill
July 2006 was the first time in 5 years i've managed to get down to Edinburgh, but i used to travel down as often as i could. Happily, i now live here, and it's given me a good chance to get to know it quite well. It is a beautiful city, with a wonderful blend of classic and modern architecture, festivals taking place all through the year, a vibrant nightlife, and of course, one of the most famous castles on the planet...

The Castle & The City

The history of Edinburgh goes back well over a Millenium already, from the early Celts & Romans who defended & lived on Castle Rock. It is possible to see the castle from almost any area of the city, and it dominates the skyline.
The rest of the city is reasonably level in comparison with the castle and the royal mile, and shopping is the next biggest attraction for most visitors, with Princes street rivalling Oxford Street (London) for variety & quantity.

The Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is a veritable treasure chest for tourists, every second shop being either a souvenir shop or a pub, interspersed with museums, Churches & Squares... Excellent!! :-p But do beware: during the Summer months it is packed with tourists, which can be very annoying...

Accomodation is easy enough to find too, with a wide range of hostels and hotels all through the center of the city, and some excellent ones in the suburbs.

Pros:"Full of history, full of shops, full of things to do!"
Cons:"Very busy"
In A Nutshell:"Its Scotlands most famous city for a good reason!"

Nice Edinburgh page, I also enjoyed the views from the top of Camera Obscura, and you are right the cannon is fired at 1pm (it's cheaper than doing it at 12). Cheers, Clive

Glad you managed to get back to Edinburgh again. It's a place I really like, too. Looking forward to seeing more on this page.
