The upper reaches of civilization

The main street
You know, the first time i ever went to Inverness was about 6 years ago (2000)... & it's taken me this long to actually write something about this wonderful little city. These days i visit at least once a week, and there's always something to do.
You wouldn't really call Inverness a touristy city (It looks more industrial than anything else), though it has a fair bit to offer tourists, such as the museum, the castle, some river walks... and of course, Loch Ness :-)
It is about the last large town/city in the North of Scotland... everything further up can be classified as more of a village than anything else.

Still easily accessible

Accomodation in Inverness is easy enough to find, with a choice of 3-4 hostels, and about a dozen hotels at least. And thats just in the city center. Accessing the city is also pretty easy, with the bus & train stations being situated next to each other, very close to the center of town, and regular services to most areas of the city leaving from the same spot.

The Nessie Monster's Hangout

And now, back to Loch Ness. Probably the only reason most people ever hear about Inverness... The legend of the Loch Ness Monster is as old as time itself, it seems, though nothing has ever been proven, and almost all photo's ever taken of it have been proven to be fake, the legend persists, and the region has flourished as a tourist destination because of it.
Combined with the fact that the drive to Drumnadrochit is wonderful, and the remains of castle Urquhart still lie on the banks of the loch, its not hard to see why its so popular!

Pros:"Enough to do & see for a few days"
Cons:"very far North, slightly out of the way"
In A Nutshell:"There's more than just the Loch Ness Monster!"

How come I've never come across Jimmy Chungs? I used to go to Inverness several times a week , using my free bus pass. Many of my old favourite cafes and restaurants have gone...
