If you are travelling by train to the Ukraine, you will have to pass through Chop. There is nothing there except for some interesting socialist artowkr in the concourse...
If you hold an EU passport you will not need a visa. President Yushchenko suspended EU citizen's visa requirements from 1 May 2005 - I think it will last for a trial period of 3 or 4 months but check your nearest Ukrainian Embassy's website.. When you enter, you will have to fill in a small form and make sure you keep your part otherwise leaving the country could be troublesome!
WARNING: When travelling back from the Ukraine, expect a long and slow check on the Slovak side of the border - we had 5 passport checks and we asked several times if we were carrying cigarettes!
When entering from Slovakia, as far as I am aware, there is only one train - the night train that connects Bratislava and Kiev. We used this train to travel between Kosice (Slovakia) and L'viv (Ukraine). Even though we had purchased an international ticket, for some reason we had to pay an extra fee once we crossed the border and had passed trough passport control. This fee (8.5 HRNs each to L'viv) was aparently for the beds on the night train as there are no normal seats (the passenger part we travelled on from Kosice was disconnected), even though it was mid-morning we still had to sleep! We we then asked to pay another 10HRNs each for bed linen - on the way back we didn't have to as a Ukrainian lady who was sharing our cabin translated that we didn't want linen. On the way back, we had to pay the same fee to chop (8.5HRNs) then another 1.5HRNs each to travel on the normal passenger car to Kosice from Chop.
WARNING: The wait at Chop is long and slow as the train has to be adjusted to travel on the Ukrainian tracks which are narrower.
