Tara

by Sencanka - last update: Nov 28, 2004

Mountain Tara lies 185 km south west of Belgrade . The Tara National Park can be reached from Bajina Basta directly (by the Bajina Basta - Kaludjerske Bare road), from Bajina Basta via Perucac (by the Perucac - Mitrovac road) and from Kremna (the Kremna - Kaludjerske Bare road).

Tara was declared a National Park in 1981. It is in the mountainous region of Western Serbia and it spreads on the Tara and Zvezda mountains, in a large bend of the river Drina. It abounds with river gorges Brusnica, gentle slopes, steep rocky inclines as well as waterfalls Perucac and caves Topla Pec .

The area of this national park is about 22,000 hectares and its altitude varies from 250 to 1,500 metres a.s.l. The park management office is in Bajina Basta.
This area is covered with forests;both evergreen and dediduos forests. A rare sort of pine named Pancic Spruce after is famous discoverer may be seen there.
Its fauna is also divers: brown bears and mountain goats, gray eagles, griffin vultures as well as hundereds of birds are not unusual in the region .
Mt. Tara is both a summer and winter resort , with Kaludjerske Bare and Mitrovac as its two main centers of interests.

The Drina Gorge, which is an an integral part of park, can be toured by boat. This is a special attraction and memorable experience.
