Club del Vino: great wine and tango music

Restaurant Name: Club del Vino
food is not bad, but this restaurant is home to a wine museum! Also it is a great place to hear tango music -- Marconi and Salgan often perform there. There are two areas, the restaurant proper and the cafe/theater. Make sure you specify which room you want when you make your reservation. People tend to dress up for an evening out here - so don't go in your walking around clothes.

Restaurant Name: Havanna
This is a chain of shops that sell what seems to be Argentina's most popular brand of alfajores (dulce de leche sandwich cookie covered in a merengue glaze or chocolate). Make sure you drop in an try one on your first day... you'll be mad if you spend one afternoon in Buenos Aires without this little treat.
Favorite Dish: Beside alfajores, Havanna sells other wonderful sweets -- my favorite are barritas --little squares of firm dulce de leche covered in chocolate

Restaurant Name: Sucre
After spending the days steeped in history, it was a great evening out at this very cool restaurant -- felt very much like a TriBeCa restaurant space bakc home in NYC, but hte waiters were much nicer! It is a huge room - young, baeutiful crowd is great for people-watching. Food and wine were great -- updates on traditional Argentine dishes. Even if you don't have to, make sure you take the walk upstairs to the bathrooms -- the design of this place is really impressive.

Restaurant Name: La Puerto Rico
The figure in the logo for this place is alarming -- a Sambo character in a straw hat - even depicted in the terrazzo flooring! but if you can get past that (or take it in as a bit of history) you'll enjoy a great cup of coffee, a delicious sweet and feel in the rhythm of downtown BsAs. The beautiful antique mirrors and fixtures, dark wood, and marble tables are well worth spending some time.
Favorite Dish: cafe con leche and a delicious slice of lemon pie

Quintana Bakery: Bakery Fresh Alfajores!

Restaurant Name: Quintana Bakery
Wonderful bakery is in Recoleta on Quintana - around Callao - just before you get to the park in front of the Recoleta Cemetery. The double-decker alfajores are to die for... fresh and made with love. They have a mini version, too, if you aren't feeling gluttonous. They' must have thought I was when ask them to wrap up a dozen to bring home! A few steps away from a Havanna store... get your alfajores here and other treats there!
