I visited Burlington, Vermont 4th of July holiday, 2002.

Burlington is located by Lake Champlain which is about a 6 hour drive north of New York.

Burlington is a college down and has a lot of young people living there. With that, there are a lot of bars and restaurants. Don't forget to visit the Ben & Jerry ice cream parlor on main street.

If you want a fun long weekend with some swimming and partying, this is a great place. Don't forget to buy maple syrup and cheddar cheese while in Vermont.

You can stop for some outlet shopping in Manchester, Vermont if heading back south. You'll find bargains in Giorgio Armani, Polo, Coach, Burberry, Versace stores and many others.

Lake Champlain sunset

Lake Champlin is great a great place to spend a lazy day in the sun. The water is sweet and very warmm and the beaches are not too crowded. The lake offers jet skiing, boats rentals, paddle boats and other activities. It also provided some spectacular sunsets.

• Pros:Nice town, young crowds from University of Vermont, Lake Champlain, plenty of bars and restaurant
• Cons:A bit of a hike from New York (6 hour drive)
• In a nutshell:Great weekend trip to enjoy in the summer.
