If you only visit one place in Costa Rica, make it Arenal. Grant it I have only been there and to Playa Conchal and Tamarindo, but I don't think you would be disappointed.
You can do several tours around the volcano such as hiking and horseback riding (which I did). Of course you can't go to the crater as it's constantly active.
What makes the Arenal volcano special is the it has daily eruptions. Nothing too serious, but just to remind you that it's there. It last erupted bad in 92 when 3 people died. The dead were a mother, daughter, and guide. They wanted to get closer to check it out and died from the gases.
On the picture to the right you see the side which is all bare and rocky. That is where the lava streams down. The other sides are completely tree covered.
There was also a bad eruption in 68 when 70-some people died and it buried restaurants and other infrastructure.
The daily eruptions sounds like thunder in the distance. When you view it in the daytime you can see smoke coming out of the crater and boulder running down the side.
At night you will see that in red and orange colors. But it's rare as it's usually cloud covered at night.
- Pros:Many adventure tours, hot springs
- Cons:Not a great single destination, so so food
- In a nutshell:Don't miss this place if you go to Costa Rica

Yes - I loved Arenal and the volcano. But the place where your page is is not that Arenal. It is the one that is about a mile from Cartegena, not the one near the volcano.
Actually,Tabacon Resort is the BIGGEST RIPOFF IN the Arenal/La Fortuna area. It is way overpriced, and THE SERVICE IS TERRIBLE. Definitely not worth the prices they charge. Tabacon Hot Springs, owned by the resort, is a must-see, however.
Nice page! If I ever go I will take your advice to wear proper footwear on the hanging bridge trail--I'm no fan of snakes either!
