Some Info About My Hometown

Hamamatsu is located along the coast, roughly halfway between Tokyo and Osaka. Nagoya is the closest major city. Via the Shinkansen (bullet train), it takes 45 minutes to reach Nagoya; about 90 minutes to reach Tokyo and Osaka.
Although Hamamatsu is the largest city in the Shizuoka prefecture, it's nowhere near as crowded as the other major cities. The population is roughly 600,000 people. You really don't have to worry about traffic or overcrowded public transportation.
There's various types of landscapes and scenery in and around Hamamatsu. To the west is Lake Hamana, where you can go fishing, jet skiing, or wakeboarding. South is the famous Nakatajima Sand Dunes and Enshu Nada Coast. The Tenryu River lies in the east. North is the Akaishi Mountains.
Hamamatsu is famous for unagi (eel). The main industries are the manufacturing of motorcycles and musical instruments. Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawai, and Honda have their manufacturing plants here. (Interesting fact: 100% of all pianos made in Japan are made in Hamamatsu!)

Pacific Flora 2004

The Pacific Flora 2004 (international floral festival) is happening next to Hamamatsu, from April 8 to October 11, 2004. Please see my "Must See Activities" tip for more information.
