Pelican capital of Australia

Situated where Tuggerah Lake meets the Pacific Ocean, just an hour north of Sydney on the NSW Central Coast, The Entrance has long been a holiday haven for families and retirees. Lately, however, it's been shrugging off its sleepy persona to emerge as a popular weekend and daytrip destination.

Not that The 'new' Entrance, as it's being called, has gone upmarket. It's still a friendly coastal town that's down-to-earth, or rather down-to-water, since all life revolves around the town's two jewels: the Lake and the Ocean.

The Entrance might be close enough to Sydney and Newcastle to make a daytrip feasible, but as you gaze over the lake at the silhouettes of fishing boats and pelicans against a backdrop of changing colours in the still water, you realise it's far enough away to leave all your cares behind.
