Stari Grad If your wondering why Dubrovnik doesn't seem to resemble other cities on the Dalmatian coast there is a perfectly good reasoning behind it.....Dubrovnik was an entirely independent city-state rivaling Venice until the 19th century !!! Croatia has done its very best to Croatize (Is that a word?) the city to the point where it is easy to forget the city's remarkable and independent past. Stari Grad (Old Town) can easily be explored for a couple of days. The definite highlight of the city are the massive city walls that protected the city from invasion. In fact Dubrovnik had been completely unscathed by war until in 1991 both Serb and Montenegrin forces bombarded the defenseless city as a retaliatory strike in response to Croatia's succesion from Yugoslavia. Don't worry, if you forget this info you will be reminded of it by the signs located throughout the city showing building for building which were targeted and later restored by both the Croatian and city authorities:) |
