Local Customs: Blend In

Okay, it's almost impossible to blend in. First of all you have that darn map out every five seconds. The streets start then stop then become another street. You look for the Trevi Fountain and find the Pantheon instead. Well, at least you don't look like these guys. Haha.

How To: Learn Some of the Language

It has been said on VT time and time again. Learn a few words. Although most people in Rome speak at least some english, it really doesn't take much effort to learn some italian and it's the polite thing to do. And you're more likely to get better service. Thank You: Grazie You're Welcome: Prego Please: Per favore Do you speak English?: Parla Inglese? One, Two (as in one espresso or a table for two): Uno, Due A table for two: Un tavalo per due Do you have: Avete This book was great. It was part of a language CD/Book combo. You can also get free podcasts of italian language lessons on iTunes. Another helpful website was http://babelfish.yahoo.com/. You type in the sentence in your language and it will translate to your language of choice. I used when I needed to email hotels with questions about rooms or cab fare. The only problem is it's a literal translation which doesn't always work well. I would send both the english and translated version.

Local Customs: Personal Care

All of our hotels came with a bidet which fascinate me. The one in Rome actually came with it's own set of towels and personal care wash. Being an american I'm not really sure what to do with bidets. They don't exactly come with instructions. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

I had a great time ordering coffee in Italy. There's nothing like a cappuccino in the morning. In Italy cappuccino is typically served only in the morning. And stopping at a bar in the afternoon for an espresso. Drinking your coffee at the counter is much, much cheaper. I've been told that if you simply ask for a caffe you get an espresso. I just asked for espresso. A caffe americano is espresso watered down with hot water. For you coffee lovers its the closest thing you can get to american coffee. An espresso with a touch of steamed milk is a caffe macchiato. Also a favorite of mine. It's funny. Being in Italy really brings home the culture in America of carrying around that steaming cup of coffee all day long like an accessory. I felt weird without it.

ludogatto Fri May 23, 2008 20:53 UTC are u sure u cannot immaginate how to do with a bidet? It's impossible for an Italian ( and other european) to do their complate intimate care! Japanes know it very well! | Laurel914 Wed Mar 19, 2008 18:37 UTC Thanks for the tip that Italian lessons can be obtained free on iTunes. I've been meaning to pick up a cd before my trip in May, but this will save me the time and expense. Thanks again! | newsphotogirl Sun Dec 31, 2006 21:52 UTC So true Joroma. Cappucino is served all day, I've updated my tip to say that most of the locals consider it a "morning drink". Thanks for the heads up. | Joroma Sun Dec 31, 2006 17:08 UTC Cappuccino is served all day not just in the morning |
