So you have a fabulous room overlooking the canal. At night you can hear the water gently rocking the boats. So serene, so romantic. And then you wake up in the morning with red blotches all over your face. Venetian Mosquitos!
On our last day in Venice I woke up early, put in my contacts and looked in the mirror. To my horror my whole face was covered in red blotches. I called for my husband and knew I was in trouble because he immediately looked concerned and started examing my face. That's when I noticed that he had the red blotches as well. My first thought was bed bugs. But they were only on our face and more like a rash than a bug bite.
Our concierge, who didn't seem the least bit concerned by the way, gave us directions to the nearest Farmacia. The first thing the pharmacist asked us was did we leave our windows open at night. We told her that we did in fact leave our windows open. She looked apalled then said something in italian to her co-worker which didn't sound flattering. Then she turned to us and said, "Mosquitos". We explained to her that they didn't itch and the spots were flat rather than having a raised bump like a mosquito bite. Then she asked us if we had fish recently. We had. It was fish night at the pensione. We had decided to have all of our meals there and had been looking forward to fish night especially. In fact the appetizer, 1st and 2nd course were all fish. She suggested an allergic reaction to the fish. She decided that either way we should take an antihistame.
So basically we walked around Venice our last day with red blotches all over our face. I'm pretty sure they were mosquito bites because the next day on our plane ride home some of them started to itch. It's 4 days later and they're still there. Moral of the story. Close your windows at night. Bring bug repellent. And this fish is probably okay after all:)
