Real People Live in Ghana

by atufft - last update: Apr 23, 2008

Ghana is mostly about people watching

Accra Beach on a cloudy day
Starting at the beach in Accra, one quickly realizes that this place is very complex socially. Ghanan's love American music, and yet they have several forms of their own that Americans should love (if the listener can open his mind to learn about them). Ghanians are gregarious and honest, and it's hard to find a place on earth with so much happening with so few physical resources.

Ghana admires English and American culture

While a variant of British English is the dialect that Ghana tries to emulate, in terms of cultural affection, Ghana fits nicely with the USA. A large number of slaves were exported to America via the coastal forts, and today the favorite music among the young people in Ghana is more likely to come from New York or Los Angeles than from London. In any case, the effect of the English language has been beneficial for Ghana as its government is somewhat more democratic, and its institutions somewhat less corrupt, than its West African neighbors.

Americans and Europeans will be amused

The friendly culture of Ghana brings with it amusing uses of the English language, the second language for anyone in Ghana. I liked purchasing greeting cards with the amusing entries, for example. Along the roadside, I frequently found funny things to photograph. But, don't stop with this introductory page for Ghana, check out my other pages of text and images of tribal people and animals who call this nation home. Along the Atlantic coast west of the capitol of Accra, I recommend visits to my pages for the fishing village and university town of Winneba and slave fortress town of Cape Coast. In central Ghana, all roads lead through the Ashanti kingdom capital of Kumasi, a wonderful garden city. On the highway leading through to Burkina Faso, the north central tribes around Bolgatanga offer plenty to do in a rural setting. The most wild Upper West Region, with its capitol at Wa, provides a view into the Muslim dominated region of Ghana, and the Black Volta, where hippos can be seen. Other wildlife, including elephants, can be seen in the far north at Mole National Park, and nearby, Ghana's oldest building, the mud mosque of Larabanga, awaits visitors adventureous enough to get there.
