City of the Alamo and Riverwalk

by atufft - last update: Jan 11, 2006

Tight ramps and causeways winding to the CBD

Building near Alamo proudly waves Texas Flag
I booked a hotel very near the riverwalk (see hotel tip) because after a twelve hour drive from Tucson, I figured we'd be pretty tired of any additional travel. So, we only saw the riverwalk area and the Alamo for a brief glimpse before continuing on to New Orleans. My wife liked the city a lot, but I'm also glad that I persuaded her to exercise restrain as New Orleans is a greater city. Because we arrive late, most restaurants were already closed, but we did find one great one open (see restaurant tip)
Riverwalk at night

The riverwalk was narrow and difficult for our dog

This was his first big road trip, so after 12 hours of only periodic walks at Texas rest stops, navigating the narrow passageways of the Riverwalk at night were a challenge for Dali, our miniature schnauzer. Apparently, San Antonio got wise and avoided turning the river into a huge storm drain as so many other cities have done in the southwest. Though the water looks too dirty to even put one toe into, I found that saving the waterfront in San Antonio was a very smart move. Trees and greenry on both sides for the marble banked river provide enough ambiance for trendy restaurants and river boat concessions.
Alamo at dawn

The Alamo is smaller than I thought

Considering it's size among the icons of history in the southwest, I would have expected the Alamo to rival the mission buildings of California and New Mexico. But, the Alamo is very small. The fortress space around it has been carefully conserved though and there's a considerable monument to the those who gave their lives in the conflict that went on there.

The CBD has gotta be a fun place to drive a big rig! My time spent here in Texas brings back the heat that never ended in the evening. Godd for all of those bats!

Just made a booking for San Antonio in Sept. Looking forward to a return visit - the first was curtailed by the events of 9/11. leyle

The River Walk was narrow and difficult for our people, too. Maybe earlier in the evening might have been better, but we constantly talked about how if someone shouldered us into the water, they would most likely dive in with us...
