El Paso appears not to be Bush country

We stopped in downtown...

Downtown El Paso
We had a long trip from Tucson to San Antonio (see those pages), and there wasn't much time to appreciate the city. So, we drove downtown to see the central business district and get Mexican food take-out. The city seems to not be so-much GW country as I would have thought. The college student providing service in the restaurant claimed that El Paso was in the Democratic fold. The city seems to be a powerhouse on the border, with plenty of industry and cross border traffic. Its not quite as busy as the San Diego-Tijuana border zone though, a border I know well from days as a taxi driver.

The Hispanic influence is very clear here...

We failed to make take the off-ramp to the boot factory outlet. Probably most of the Texas boots are made here with the help of Mexican labor.
Another shot of Downtown El Paso

The area around El Paso is largely empty desert

There are a few suburbs of the great border city, but mostly the city empties out in to empty desert with sagebrush. I could see fires in the distance. The air quality control here is probably not too good, but we also found a strong breeze blowing...

Pros:"Great Place to buy boots and eat Mexican food"
Cons:"concrete and empty desert--not much landscaping here"
In A Nutshell:"El Paso is an industrial city the deserves Texas respect"

Memory maker. :) Alan, when I looked over your El Paso page, I zoned in on the Hotel Paso del Norte. I stayed there back when I was in high school. We were on a National Latin Club trip out west. Neat place.
