Crow Agency is the Crow Tribal Capitol

Located on I-90 in Montana, Crow Agency became the center of the Crow Tribal Nation, known in their own language as the Apsáalooke, when the reservation was reduced to it's present size. The 2000 census count shows that the town of Crow Agency has some 1,500 residents. The reservation is near the foot of the Big Horn Mountains in a small valley where the Little Big Horn River flows. There are a number of tribal festivities held annually in this small Montana town, but here I focus mostly upon the nearby Little Big Horn National Monument and the Crow Trading Post shown here.

Little Big Horn National Monument

The Little Big Horn Battle of 1876 is easily the most famous if not the most disasterous American military campaign in American history. Led by the ambitious Colonel George Armstrong Custer who got his start in the post-Civil War era, particularly at Fort Hays (see Hays, Kansas), a column of U.S. 7th Cavalry attempted to punish wandering Sioux and Cheyenne tribes during Great Sioux War of 1876-77. Apparently, Custer wanted to travel lightly in terms of weaponry, in order to travel quickly. However, his forces were drawn into a pincher, resulting in a remarkable victory among combined Lakota and Cheyenne warrior forces led by Sitting Bull. Ironically, the Crow tribal members claim to be the original inhabitants of this region, were mostly allied with Custer's American forces since the other tribes had encroached upon their traditional territory. Perhaps the most famous Crow scout, Bloody Knife, was killed by shot to the head while consulting with Major Reno, which may have sparked Reno abrupt and disorderly retreat during the early phases of the battle. So, today, some bitter relations continue among these tribes that once participated in this epic struggle. In any case, the tips here provide mostly a visual backdrop to the wealth of literature available on-line about this famous battle.

When I was a kid, I read many many times about Custer and Little Big Horn. I've never been there. Your page reminds me that, in spite of my travels, there is still sooo much more waiting to be seen.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the battle, these places are always moving when we visit them today.

Great famous place memorialized in apparently appropriate fashion.
