Lowell Observatory--Part 3

The Observatory is trying to go green, but it also has some great vintage equipment worth seeing. There's a theater, planetarium, and the old water house to see, as well as numerous domes for the variety of astronomical research projects still being conducted there.

Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ

Lowell Observatory--Part 2

This is one of the most oldest and historic observatories in the world! The telescopes here are not the largest, but they are vintage equipment located on a mountain in the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the United States. Named after the founder, the Lowell Observatory has an excellent visitory program. In a recent quick visit, I spent most of my time simply wandering around the observatory campus. See the link below for complete detaiils about visitor programs.

View from Mars Hill Road Turn-out

Lowell Observatory--Part 1

Near the entrance gate to the Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill Road, there is a popular turn-out where one can view over the city of Flagstaff. One can watch as trains pass by the old downtown.

Thorpe Park Entrance - Flagstaff

Thorpe Park Entrance

Thorpe Park

At the base of Mars Hill, where the Lowell Observatory is located, there is a rather extensive city park complex that is popular for large family and company picnics. I believe that pets are not allowed in this park though. The park is no doubt named after the Native American Olympic champion runner, Jim Thorpe.

Walk Around Residential Flagstaff

Between the downtown area and the climb to the Lowell Observatory, there is a neighborhood with a number of old homes of architectural interest. Restoration of these homes continues. These images provide one with an idea of the typical architecture found in Flagstaff neighborhoods built during the first half of the 20th century.

Federated Community Church, Flagstaff - Flagstaff

Federated Community Church, Flagstaff

Red Sandstone Construction

There are numerous buildings around town that are built of locally quarried red sandstone. While not the most durable material, according to those who have worked in the restoration of these buildings, the stone is quite handsome and resembles the type of sandstone used in Northern India for many temples and tombs. Besides the Cocino Courthouse, the Methodist-Presbyterian Church (circa 1906) at 400 Aspen Street and the England House Bed and Breakfast (circa 1902) at 614 West Santa Fe Street are perhaps the most significant red sandstone buildings. The latter is particularly interesting because of the mixed use of red and white sandstone, but the history of the community church is also very interesting.

Cocino County Courthouse, Flagstaff - Flagstaff

Cocino County Courthouse, Flagstaff

Cocino County Courthouse

Built in 1899, the Cocino County Courthouse still dominates the skyline of Flagstaff. The tower and construction of locally quarried red sandstone makes this building one of the county's most important architecturally, as well as historically. It's interesting to note that Flagstaff is the county seat of the second largest county in the USA (after San Bernardino in California). Furthermore, Cocino County is home to numerous tribal reservations and the Grand Canyon.
