"Road Stop on Way Through to Puerto Ayacucho" El Sombrero by atufft

El Sombrero en Los Llanos

On the first visit through the area, due to engine and organizational troubles, we left Valencia in late afternoon for a week long trip. The destination was ultimately Puerto Ayacucho, but we had to cruise through San Juan Del Los Morros, El Sombrero, and Chaguaramas first. By the time we arrived in El Sombrero is was late and we decided this small town was our only hope for a decent place to stay.

By morning light, we bought marron doble and left

But, on another trip, we stayed for lunch (see restaurant tip) and ate a big steak a la plancha. Either way, El Sombrero has plenty of llaneros and rancho owners around. This is an agriculturally productive part of Venezuela.

The old adobe buildings are worth a few minutes

We walked around town before jumping in the car and continuing on to Chaguaramas, and the crossroads that leads to Cabruta. At Cabruta, the ferry crosses the Orinoco to Caicara.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:First authentic Llanero pueblo on way to Las Amazonas
  • Cons:Not much in terms of places to stay, especially at night
  • In a nutshell:El Sombrero has character and a great red meat restaurant

Fascinating! I have stayed in a place similar to what you describe, but in Mexico.
