"Vevcani and Vevcani Springs" Vevcani by Pijlmans

Vevcani is a village with old-style houses located northwest above Lake Ohrid. It is almost impossible to show you Vevcani just with pictures; The omnipresent sound of streaming water from the Vevcani Springs through the village is something you just have to experience.

There is at least one working watermill, a church dedicated to St Nikola, as well as a recently build picnic area in a beautiful small park at the springs.

Vevcani

Allegedly the people of Vevcani held their own referendum during the break-up of Yugoslavia in order to make their own republic. Although they did not gain independence, they created their own coat of arms and printed their own specimen money.

Every January 13th and 14th there is a carnival in Vevcani where the villagers dress up in costumes representing evil things, in the hope that if evil is faced with its own reality, this will scare it away. Evil costumes include: policemen, soldiers, pregnant brides, an old groom etc :-)

View from the Monastery of St Spas

The Monastery of St Spas lies on a hill overlooking Vevcani. It is a steep hike to the monastery, but the view is excellent and the church which is built against a rock is worth the effort. See my travelogue below for more information how to get there.
