This visit to the volcanoes and lavafields of the 1730 eruptions was one of the highlights of my Lanzarote holiday. It was even better than the guided volcano tour we did afterwards, although that was a bit more educational! The hike is about 9 km, 2-3 h. Follow the road through La Geria, and take the road north to Mancha Blanca. On your left you will see a closed dirt-road, park your car here. The volcano on the left is called Montana del Cuervo (Montana de las Lapas o del Cuervo), the one on the right Montana Negra. Follow the road to Montana del Cuervo, and follow the volcano around to the north where you can easily enter the crater. We had a nice picnic here, where once the lava was flowing...we also climbed to the top of the volcano, from where the panorama over the lava fields is truly unreal. Walk back to the asphalt road and continue climbing Montana Negra. Orientation point is an old cistern, a little white building once used for holding water. Follow the steep path up the volcano. The view at the just visited Montana del Cuervo is amazing, as is the sight at the reddish Caldera Colorada. This hike is adapted from a hike described in the hiking guide in my general tips section.

Off The Beaten Path: Camino de las Vueltas: Hike to a deserted beach

You can combine this hike with some sights in the environment. Suggested day-trip (see my other tips as well): 1) Jardin de Cactus 2) Cueva de los Verdes 3) Mirador de Rio (next to it, for the mirador itself you have to pay a too high entrance fee) 4) Camino de las Vueltas, enjoy the beach Playa del Risco, and go back. Camino de las Vueltas (also called Camino de Guatifay) brings you via a steep path down the cliffs to a deserted beach. The view along this hike is magnificent! Follow the road from Las Rositas to Mirador del Rio. After the last houses of Las Rositas you will find a small hidden parking opposite to a traffic sign and close to the last pole of the telephone wire. If you passed the white ruins of a house you went to far! Just walk past the parking and go downhill. Don´t forget to breath if you see this superb outlook! Once you´re at sea level, follow the road to the right until you are at the beach, probably the best of Lanzarote... Too bad you have to walk all the way up again after a swim in the blue sea :-) This hike is described in the hiking guide mentioned in the general tips.

Off The Beaten Path: Hike from Yaiza to Femes

This hike takes you over a high mountain ridge and has some very good panorama points. About 9 km, 3-4 h. In Yaiza, you walk south from Plaza de los Remedios near the church in the direction of Degollada. Take the road to the left, about 50 m before the cemetery. The road goes up the mountain, orientation point are the ruins of an old windmill. Go right at the first and the second branching of the path. Walk to the antennas that disfigure the top (Atalaya de Femes). However, the view is superb here. Walk back from the antennas and descent to Femes (keep right). If you have parked your car in Yaiza, walking back would be about one hour, but you better take a taxi... This hike is adapted from the hiking guide described in my general tips.
