St Joakim Osogovski Monastery

Macedonian monasteries: Monastery accommodation in Macedonia

Many monasteries in Macedonia offer accommodation for guests. Some of the monasteries, such as the St Joakim Osogovski Monastery in Kriva Palanka are even comparable to a simple hotel. Staying in a monastery is not only cheaper than staying in a hotel, but it also gives you the unique opportunity to enjoy these old sacred places from a local point of view.

It is probably difficult for a foreigner to book the monasteries in advance, since you'll have to call them and in most cases it will be unlikely that you'll get somebody on the phone who speaks English. It may also be uncomfortable to stay there when you cannot communicate at all with the hosts, when they do not speak English. For us, it's not a problem since my girlfriend is Macedonian.

We have stayed in several monasteries in Macedonia. You can follow the links below for more info and contact details.

The Monastery of St Joakim Osogovski near Kriva Palanka:

In Strumica: Monastery of the 15 Martyrs of Tiberiopolis:

Monastery of St George in Negotino:

Monastery of St Spas in Trstenik near Prilep:

You can sleep in a former school building near the Monastery of Lesnovo, see

I know you can stay in the following monasteries as well, we have been to most of them but never stayed there:

Near Ohrid in Velgosti there’s the Monastery of St Petka:

Monastery of St Petka in Orovnik near Ohrid:

Monastery of St Stefan near Ohrid:

The famous Monastery of Treskavec near Prilep, accessible by a 8 km hike as well as by car:

Monastery of St Ana in Pelister National Park:

The Slivnica Monastery near Slivnika at Prepa lake. Maybe one of the most beautiful and quiet places to stay:

The Monastery of St Petka outside of Stip:

The St Jovan Bigorski Monastery in Mavrovo National Park. This is a male monastery and men and women (if even allowed) have to sleep separately and I heard that the (very early!) morning mess is obligatory. Some say you can stay here and that you will not be turned away if you arrive late at night, but I don't think this monastery is meant to offer tourist accommodation: Some first-hand information from somebody who stayed here:

It should be possible to stay in the Monastery of St Petka near Brajcino (Lake Prespa region) but when we were there it was not possible. Maybe they were restoring the building, I am not sure:

I am not sure if you are able to stay in the Monastery of the famous diseased pop star Tose Proeski near Krusevo, but it may be possible. I have not been there yet.

There are hotels at the Monastery of St Pantelejmon near Skopje ( and Monastery of St Naum at the south of Lake Ohrid:

Tajimste Mountain Huts - FYR of Macedonia

Tajimste Mountain Huts

Tajmiste Mountain Hut: Mountain hut near Mavrovo National Park

If you are going to hike in the Mavrovo National Park, you could stay in the mountain hut near Tajmiste. It is a simple but clean mountain hut, with about 40 beds. You probably have to share your room with other guests if it gets busy.

This used to be an old railway station, that has been renovated. You enter the site by car through a small tunnel from the road to Tajmiste (see pictures).

There's the possibility to have a BBQ and campfire (and to drink rakija!). Like other mountain huts, you have to bring your own food and drinks.

The mountain hut is run by volunteers from Mountain Club Kitka (Rabotnicki Kitka), and you have to contact them to ask if the mountain hut is open or if they can open it for you. If you want, I could also arrange something for you since one of the members of the hiking club that runs the place is a friend of mine.

Tel: +3892 20 42010 (Bosko Talevski, President of the Mountain Club Kitka)

Price Comparison: least expensive

Directions: West from the road between Gostivar and Kicevo, near the village of Tajmiste. Near the railroad station Tajmiste, reachable from Gostivar by asphalt road, turning left before Mavrovo, 100 km from Skopje.

Private houses: Cheap accommodation in Ohrid

When you get off the bus from Skopje to Ohrid, more often than not local people are waiting at the bus station to offer you a room. Keep this in mind before you book an expensive hotel! I cannot actually say that I have gotten a room like this myself, since my family-in-law have a house in Ohrid.
But it would be an option for me when this would not be the case!

Address: Busstation in Ohrid
