The Partizan basketball club was founded as a section of the Sports Society of the former Yugoslav People’s Army (YPA). The "Partizan Sports Society" was set up on October 4. 1945. The basketball section of Partizan evolved from the army basketball team that won the title on the state championship tournament in 1945, beating the national selections of Yugoslav republics. Members of today’s BC Partizan play under that name since the first Yugoslav Championship 1946. In 1953 Sports Society ceased to be the army’s club and changed its name into "Yugoslav Sports Society Partizan" (YSS Partizan).
