Fort Golubac
Just 50 or so miles (80 -90 KM, I forgot) from Golubac Fort, also on the right bank of Danube lies the prehistoric settlement Lepenski Vir.
Where the river Danube runs through the Iron Gates gorge, in Serbia and Montenegro on the Romanian border. One of Europe’s oldest farming settlements, dating from the 6th millennium BC, it is possibly the earliest and best preserved late Mesolithic to Neolithic (Middle to New Stone Age) site in Europe.
Golubac Fort
New scientific theories (or are they just thories ;o) will probably prove that Golubac wasn't really a major DEFENSIVE point (due to it's position on the border between many empiers throughout the history), but something completly different.
This was a major spot since Roman times.
And for years Golubac (and it's great Castle, as it is today) were considered a great military City, but nowdays history scientists in Pozarevac (Centar of Pozarevac county - see www.pozarevac.org.yu and www.turizampozarevac.com) say that this is the safest natural border in Europe so there was no reason to buld a big Military Fort here at any point.
In fact they think that solders were turned to miners and were exploited by their emperors (Romans, Serbs...) by being used to dig valuable ore from the nearby mines.
Djerdap NP and Golubac Castle in the back
The National Park Djerdap starts there as the main road goes through the ruins of the old town.
Drivers should be careful as all the drivers that pass through here every day, 'cause of the constatnt presence of the visitours of the Castle.
You'll find it interesting that allthough there are no organized tours to visit Golubac Castle there is almost always someone there taking photos or just enjoying the view.

Glory to the hero!
