Arrival in Mexico Tenochtitlan

Arriving in Mexico Tenochtitlan

Arriving in Mexico can be scary. First thing you need to know is do you really need to be there? Because if you are heading out to some other part of Mexico, there are buses that depart from right in front of the airport arrivals place. So if you are going off to Cuernavaca or Puebla or someplace, you don't need to waste time and energy taking taxis and finding a hotel...just hop on the bus.
However, if you do need to be in Mexico city... here is what you do. Recover your luggage, and then join the queue ("the line" in USA) which says "Taxis Controlados" . You need to be able to say what part of the city you are heading for....and they will sell you a taxi ticket for that zone. Then you walk out through the door that says taxis. Ignore everyone, unless you want to pay a dude a few pesos for carrying your bag about 5 yards (but you don't have any change to you end up giving him far too much), or opening the door of your taxi. Give the taxi driver your ticket. He keeps one half, you keep the other. Write the number of his taxi on your ticket (this lets him know that you are an experienced traveller, following the official "how to survive in Mexico" advice.
Have a nice time. Most bus stations also have a Taxis Controlados service. If you don't know this, you can spend a long time trying to wave down a taxi.... but the drivers are not allowed to pick you up unless you have a ticket. Taxi drivers love to talk. Tell him your name... shake his hand. Say Mucho Gusto. They think foreigners are all arrogant, so you have to try to prove them wrong. That is what I think anyway.
