Time to breathe

After the hassle with all these touts, crazy traffic and struggling with a bad stomach in other cities in India, we really enjoyed our 3 days in Jaisalmer.

People in Jaisalmer seem more relaxed, Tourism is still developing and the heat slows down life in general. As a tourist you feel really welcome and you are (not yet) treated as a cash cow.

History

Jaisalmer is a small city (60'000 citizen) in Rajastan, India, just a few kilometres shy from the boarder to Pakistan. Out of this political reason, the airport is shut down until further notice and you can only reach Jaisalmer by Bus or Train. This makes it very much off the beaten track and might explain this tranquillity that we experienced.

Fort

The fort is the main attraction in Jaisalmer and unlike other forts in India you can actually stay overnight in the fort. There are several hotels and guest houses in the fort. Yet, as the fort is literally falling apart, the choice is yours if you consider this as ethically correct. Let's hope that the people in Jaisalmer start to appreciate their sight and will finally start investing some money to preserve their fort.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Less hassle than in other cities
  • Cons:Not on the typical tourist route
