We stumbled across this museum by accident and spent a long time wandering through its rooms, listening to the stories and absorbing the atmoshere. It is a restored shophouse where the experience of immigration from China and life in Singapore is represented by historical artifacts, recollections, reconstructions, and audiovisual presentations. It is over several floors with lift access, which can be organised to avoid any steps on request. It provided an excellent insight into the Chinese experience and the interaction with the British and local Malays to produce the existing multicultural mix. Opening hours:10am-7pm daily Admission: $8.00 (SGD) adults, $4.80children

Taking the small train ride aroung the safari was an excellent introduction to the animals, and was very helpful for Susan who finds walking very tiring. After the warnings not to use flash cameras, the usual suspects were put to shame and the tour continued in the warm, noisy (cicadas and frogs with odd bird calls) dark. The animals were illuminated by lamps mimicking moonlight which was more than adequate. The commentary was useful (only in English, I think) but a bit corny in parts. Arrive early if you want tickets for the Creatures of the Night show. It is also possible to walk along different trails to see more animals and to take low light pho tos The food in the stalls in the park did not look particularly appealing., and bottled water was expensive.

The golden dome of this mosque is glimpsed frommany angles in the surrounding area, but is seen best from Bussorah Street. On Fridays, and at prayer times, the area is busy but much quieter than the nearby Arab Street for the rest of the week. Outside there are separate ablution areas for men and women, who worship separately within the mosque. The steps approaching the prayer hall are an obstacle course past shoes which seem rarely to be put in the racks provided. Non Muslims may approach the prayer hall if they remove their shoes, but may not enter the worship area which can be viewed from the doorway.
