On The City | View of Financial District |
My father hates San Francisco. As a construction worker, he dreaded doing jobs in the city, knowing that he'll have to double park or fight for a parking space, only to get a parking ticket by the relentless meter maids. He hates the fog, he hates the cold, and as a result, we hardly travelled to the city. On the other hand, my Mom, sister, and I like the city. When we were younger, we used to ride CalTrain up from San Jose to go shopping.
Over the years, SF is a city I have taken for granted. There is a modern and rough edge to it that can only be appreciated. True, driving can be a nightmare but you'll do fine as long as you can be aggressive too. I like driving in the city, even in my manual transmissioned Geo Metro. It takes me around a city that is easily navigated and full of awesome places to see. |
| | On Favorites Through the years, I have begun to experience more and more places. I am a person of predictable pattern, so I usually go back to places I like again and again, hence my constant desire to eat in North Beach! The last time I went to the city, I walked from North Beach to Coit Tower (what a hike!!). There is a $3.75 entrance fee to take an elevator ride to the top. The small elevator felt like a coffin, as 8 people were packed in like a sardines, but the ride is worth it. It gave remarkable views. We were fortunate to have a clear day albeit windy! |
On Sights San Francisco is never short of sights to see. There are many "Must Sees:"
The California Academy of Sciences Golden Gate Bridge (Walk Across) Coit Tower (Go to the top) Golden Gate Park (Beautiful Gardens) San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Haight/Ashbury Neighborhood The Castro (The Epitome of Gay Acceptance) The Marina Chrissy Fields Fisherman's Wharf (for touristy thing) SBC Park (for a Giants Game) Union Square (Designer Stores) Cable Cars (Take a Ride) North Beach (Great Italian Food) Go to the Theatres Visit Chinatown Palace of Fine Arts Legion of Honor The Exploratorium The Conservatory of Flowers (Just Like Kew Gardens)
On a side note: Tourists usually get a kick out of the craziness and openness of the city's locals, but the large number of homeless people can make for an uncomfortable walk on the streets. Although the city has been trying to clean up the streets of beggars, I sometimes feel unsafe on the streets, especially at night. Just be careful.
A great website to find up to date cultural events, arts, etc is www.sfarts.org. | | |
