Visiting Valletta

by Anthro - last update: Aug 14, 2003

Valletta Skyline From Sliema
I arrived in Valletta by bus. I did not know what to expect or where to go. I wandered around the city, just following whatever caught my eye. That's the good thing about Malta...there's plenty of eye catching sites to see.

I found old abandoned buildings, I saw mangy stray cats sifting through garbage, local residents sitting on fold out chairs in the middle of alleyways talking to other neighbors, even a car accident with both drivers yelling at each other.

I saw Valletta in a day, yet I returned several times after that first one, all with new and exciting experiences to share and remember.

Don't Let The Crowds Stop You...

from enjoying what Valletta has to offer. There are loads of churches, museums, sweeping views, restaurants, and shops. When you first come through the main city gates, Republic Street will be your first sight of Valletta's busy thoroughfare.

Attractions are well marked by pointed arrows. If you're unsure where to go, there is a tourism office right by the city gates. Just follow the signs and the crowds. You'll find the Museum of Archaeology, Malta Experience, Upper Barakka Gardens, and Fort St. Elmo all within an easy stroll.

A Very Common Sight

Balconies crowd the small buildings as they are the yards for the residences. Since open land is a rare and almost nonexistant commodity, balconies have been the local's solution to bring nature inside.

From the ones I saw, some look like an enclosed sunroom, while others are so dilapitated that it might be unsafe to even place a potted plant on the sill. Regardless of the condition, the balconies around Malta's homes are popular, not only in tourists' pictures or wall calendars, but also for local residents, who want to restore the flats to traditional condition and appearances.
