  • Nightlife Spot: Fire Warehouse

Tuzraktar (=Fire Warehouse) can be found in Tuzolto str in old and run-down warehouse buildings. The walls of this vast yard of a former medical equipment store are covered in giant abstract murals. It is opened in a huge 30 000 m2 industrial complex in June 2005. It is a creative plateform where artists have access to free working residency places, practicing, and exhibition rooms. Already 15 theaters and dance companies are working there, photographers, visual artists have occupied the place as well, one radio under construction, 500 m2 concert room, 1800m2 exhibition galery, etc. The space will be used until the end of October (for winter reasons) and they are welcoming artists from everywhere to join, produce, perform, exhibit and make parties!

  • Budapest - Szimpla Kert in daylight
  • Szimpla Kert in daylight
  • by shirez

  • Underground, overground
It started in the summer of 2002 with the opening of Szimpla Kert. Unless you knew it was there, you would never have found it. Cross over a dusty plot of land serving as a car park and enter a doorway of bare, crumbling brick. Pass through a dimly-lit corridor, and you would emerge into the courtyard of a derelict tenement block. Derelict but no longer abandoned. Lights hang above you, strung from the walkways on the upper floor. There are dozens of people sitting round tatty tables on a collection of wobbly old chairs, and just as many standing for want of a seat. There’s music playing and there’s a bar. On a warm summer evening, it’s all remarkably pleasant. You’ve stumbled into Budapest’s first romkocsma (from the Hungarian words for a ruin and a down-at-heel pub).

Szimpla Kert (kert means garden) was an instant success. Such a success, that in subsequent summers, the idea was copied and you could choose from several other such places: Szóda Kert, Mumus, Gozsdu Udvar, Tetthely, Pótkulcs. All of these were in District VII, while in Buda was the laid-back Rác Kert. These places were arguably the life and soul of Budapest in the summer months - packed to capacity most nights, and though some were more raucous than others, they all shared the same bohemian vibe. Another thing these places shared was their fate: they have all been shut down.
Now the only romkocsma in District VII is Szimpla Kert, which moved last year to its current location at 14 Kazinczy utca. But Szimpla Kert’s days are numbered too. The local council has threatened the venue with closure if they remain open later than midnight. The Budapest Times and Budapester Zeitung spoke to some of the people behind Szimpla about how they started, their wranglings with local residents and the District VII council, and their current predicament. [...]

  • A38 cannot be described very easily, it is the hot pot of budapesti nightlife for those who know what to look for and where they would find.

They offer a wide range of music, starting from DJ KRUSH till Maceo Parker (USA), Huutajat (FIN), Vienna Art Orchestra (A)... no enough space to list them here.

A38 is the former Ukrainian barge Artemovsk 38, which became after reconstruction one of the coolest clubs in Budapest. On the deck there is a restaurant (you have to see the menu!) and a terrace (closed in winter), and in the hold there is a dance floor. A38 is a venue for designers, artists and open-minded persons. Worth visiting.

  • So, are you looking for some entertainment? Other than dancing in the stomach of the boat, or on the open-air place of it?
Then be updated by the website of the boat: for example today they will have a discussion of 'Global Warming' in the pub-area. Sorry, but it is in Hungarian. You can catch up anyway after a while:-) Or you can watch the football world championship on big screen.. (as the photo shows) Or listen to jazz. Or classical music. Play tablefootball! Do anything!!

  • Nightlife Spot: Kameleon Bar in Mammut2

Kameleon is set on the top floor of Mammut shopping centre, is a large one level bar with half of it's space dedicated to the dance floor. Being located in a flash new shopping centre might not be the most obvious place for the hottest club in Budapest - but what can you do? Forget the chameleon reference, the overwhelming theme here is hot - as in red hot. Everything from the walls to the plush sofas to the go-go dancers catwalk is done up in deep red with flickering gold flame patterns.
